Patience and Consistency Pays off in NGO Programs in DPR Korea
(Washington DC, August 8)- The Institute for Strategic Reconciliation, Inc, a 501(c)(3) think tank, has agreed with DPRK to expand its 3-year long relief and development program in the key sectors of public health and education.
During the ISR's latest 4th visit to DPRK in last April and May, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) of DPRK extended their gratitude to individual and institutional donors who participated in sending "Medicines for Reconciliation" in the past three years. About 13 million dollars value of ISR medicines and medical supplies, which were all based on the specific request of the MoPH, have been distributed in 45 hospitals and clinics in 11 provinces and cities to treat patients in DPRK.
The MoPh has renewed its large-scale programs with the ISR during the time of visit to DPRK by the fourth ISR delegates in two years. The ISR delegates included President and social psychologist Asaph Young Chun, Vice Chairman and economist with the US Department of Labor Soon Paik, and a lawyer and a Board of director James Pak.
The next 3-year programs that the ISR will be shifting towards 'Humanitarian Development Programs in DPRK' and has agreed with DPRK are as follows:
Nationwide Treatment of Hepatitis Patients
The MoPh and the ISR have agreed to launch the nationwide program to treat Hepatitis patients in 11 provinces and cities in DPRK. According to the joint agreement, the ISR provides all basic and applied essential drugs and lab equipments to treat Hepatitis patients whereas the MoPh works directly with the ISR Reconciliation Ambassadors with Medicines (RAMs) on the spot in hospitals and clinics in all 11 provinces and cities.
Customized Development Programs in All Provincial Pediatric and Maternity Hospitals
The MoPh and the ISR have also agreed to renovate 22 provincial pediatric and maternity hospitals in the next three years by continuously providing essential drugs, medical equipments, and 22 ambulances. The ISR medical expert delegates will be allowed in all provinces of DPRK, training Korean medical doctors and treating patients.
Computer Education to North Korean Teens
The ISR has agreed with DPRK to provide computer education to teens in a joint middle and high school on the humanitarian ground. This model computer education program is planned to extend to develop model high schools in 11 provinces. Computer training is expected to enhance English teaching programs both for students and teachers in DPRK.
